Thanks to Robert Ferri for setting the record straight. Ken Hopkins is yet again demonstrating why he is unfit to be mayor. Not only does he propose an ordinance without doing any work to understand the problem it's supposed to address, but he is once again unwilling to work constructively with the council. Instead, he does an end-run, issuing an executive order that appears to violate the City charter. He is thoughtless and petulant. And he's using poor people, and people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, as political pawns. Disgusting.
This has become the normal reaction of Hopkins. He refuses to do the work. He has no voice. He has a 'spokesman' who gives us platitudes. He didn't know what to do but the City attorney stuck a piece of paper in front of him to sign. Sounds like a MAGA stunt - the good, old Executive Order. He ducks & dodges anything that will ruffle his feathers but takes credit for things he didn't do. I can't be the only one who is tired of hearing 'honest and honorable'. It's time to change the City Charter again. The Council has its hands tied and the Mayor has too much power. The Council listens, tries to work for its constituents, but he roadblocks anything that the people want. Like a child, he wants it his way. He has never, in 3.5 years, listened to the people of Cranston. They get the brush-off with no explanation as to why. Facts don't matter but his alternate universe does. And he wants to be governor??? He can't run a city, let alone a state.
