The mayor is truly ill-equipped and ill-suited to his job. Sketchy. And the PPD, well what can be said. So may issues as to be a national joke.

First they lie then they deflect when the facts can no longer be denied.

The rich and powerful need to understand something. The poor come to cities because that has been the fate of the landless since the advent of cities. there is no where else to go., only cities have semi public spaces where there are lots of people money and services. It has been set up that the poor are excluded from all other places, with the margins and wetlands of the city the only places one has a chance to lie down without harassment. So the police conduct illegal operations to harass those with no where else to go, and then lie about it. For a mayor that promised flawless administration, this seems like a serious misstep

I read this article thought about the difficulty and uncomfortable nature of interviewing the powers-that-be, and decided that I need to pony-up and subscribe to your fine reporting. No one comes even close. Thanks profusely from a brand-new subscriber.

I just listened to an interview with Nicholas Kristoff about Houston’s success in cutting homeless by 60%, through coordinated efforts with nonprofits and commitment of funds-on Amanpour & Co. It can be done, Mayor Smiley.

Hurrah for you.

A definition of a Conservative is a liberal who has just been mugged. Maybe the same applies to our "progressive" mayor. He has the makings of a dictator.

This is an outrageous story, and one that deserves national attention. Police acting in fascist ways, at the direction of the city's mayor, while the Police Dept. denies the truth and puts out false statements, should all be investigated as crimes. The police in this state are corrupt, have always been corrupt, and this is yet another example. We, the citizens, pay their salaries. Enough is enough. There must be serious consequences, not less than firings and possibly a new election to get Smiley out of office. He's woefully incompetent at best, and complicit in corruption at worst.

Thank you Steve for the great work in reporting on this issue and the many others you cover. The blatant disregard for the homeless in this state is an abomination. The mayor seems hamstrung as does the governor. Both inadequate for the job. There are so many alternatives out there to provide viable shelter to the homeless. Let us hope that persons of empathy , compassion, and intelligence will come forth for the next election cycle.
