The Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition began the Rhode Island 2026 legislative session, as usual, with the 18th Annual Fighting Poverty with Faith Vigil to remind General Assembly members of their responsibility to fight poverty through policy. Every year, faith leaders from across Rhode Island, from multiple faith traditions, and from organizations and nonprofits dedicated to this work, along with residents, gather beneath the Rhode Island State House dome to amplify their collective voice.
This year, with regressive federal decisions coming out of the Trump Administration, a projected state deficit, and crises in healthcare, education, housing, and more, the coalition is prioritizing poverty and the systemic issues that exacerbate it.
The RI Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty has found new leadership in Alisha A. Pina, who assumed the position of Director this year.
This year, the Coalition is prioritizing the following legislative agenda:
Funding for Safe and Affordable Housing
School Meals for All
Funding and Transportation Improvements for RIPTA
Reforming Criminal Code (Adjust the Misdemeanor Max from 1 Year to 364 Days)
Supporting the Right for Home Healthcare Aids for People with Developmental Disabilities to Organize
Raising Revenue and Increasing Tax Fairness with a 3% Surtax on the Top 1% of Earners
Replacing Losses Caused by Federal Funding Reductions and Eliminations with State Funding
For the first time in many years, the Governor, Speaker of the House, and Senate President all spoke at the event. The keynote speaker was the Reverend Bruce Lewandowski of the Diocese of Providence.

“We start as our tradition, with the blowing of the shofar, a Jewish tradition to call the community for assembly.
Welcome to our 18th annual Fighting Poverty with Faith Vigil. It is an honor to be here with all of you. Turn to your neighbor to your right and say, ‘Thank you for your commitment.’
“Turn to your neighbor to your left and say, ‘I stand with you and all Rhode Islanders.’ I’m getting you guys used to using your voice because I’m going to ask you to use it often this year and in years to come. Thank you for giving your time, effort, courage, resilience, and most of all your voice. This work of looking out for each other and helping takes all of us and more. It is a daily job and a moral obligation.
“Thank you to our faith leaders, partners, elected officials, and community members who are here today. I want to acknowledge some of our state leaders and special guests who are in attendance.
“We have Maxine Richmond, our founder.
“We have the Most Reverend Bruce Lewandowski, the Bishop of Providence.
“We have Governor Daniel McKee, Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, Secretary of State Amore, Treasurer James Diosa, Speaker of the House Shekarchi, Senate President Val Lawson, and representatives from our congressional delegation who are fighting for us in D.C. I’m glad that you are all here with me.
“Before we have an opening prayer, I want to take a moment to acknowledge those who stood on and cared for this land long before promises were broken and our land was colonized into the America we call our country today. The original stewards of this land are the indigenous groups, including the Narragansetts, Wampanoags, Pequots, Nipmucs, and Niantics. I am Blackfoot and Cape Verdean, and as land was taken from us here in Providence. I try not to start any public gathering without sharing this truth, showing my respect, and praying for our best.
“I will now turn it over to Rabbi Emily Goldberg for our opening prayer.”

Good afternoon. I asked myself before I left my house, ‘How would Rabbi Jeff Goldwasser pray?’ So I’m going to invoke that deep spirit, and I invite you to join me.
‘Make for me a dwelling place, and I will dwell among you. And I think of dwelling places, God, I think of where we are lacking them. I think of our current houses of worship so beautifully represented here. I think of all of the different manifestations of God, of you, the creator, the source of life, as manifested and displayed by every clergy member who is standing behind me on these steps.
“But God, more importantly, I’m thinking about the people who are outside of those houses of worship who don’t feel invited inside. I think of the people who feel a deep paucity of faith, a paucity of resources, and a deep poverty of belonging.
“God, I ask that you open the doors, rip them off their hinges, if it means that every person who is standing outside of our houses of worship knows that we are not only places where people pray, but we are places that pray for people.
“God, I ask that in the world that we live in, we’re suffering from deep homelessness. We have a lot of homelessness. Our shelters are filling up. Our hospitals are currently at capacity. So God, please heal those who are sick. But God, that homelessness is not only physical, we have also hit a place of deep moral homelessness. Our moral compass in this country is at an all-time low. When it comes to figuring out where our zip codes are, where we’re figuring out where our arc can point to justice, we have totally forgotten that.
“And as long as people are being shot by ICE, as long as Renee Nicole Good is not alive, our moral compass is homeless.
“God, I ask that you provide comfort and peace to everyone who is suffering, does not feel safe, and whose lives are being threatened. And God, I ask that you bless the people here who work tirelessly on and off their pulpits, organizing, making calls, opening their homes, and digging into the discretionary funds that may or may not exist to ensure roofs over people’s heads, safety surrounding people, and most importantly, an end to the poverty that afflicts every one of us on a physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual level.
“God, I ask, I beg, that in that same verse that I started Ve’asu Li Mikdash ועשו לי מקדש, that not only you make for me a dwelling place, but that God, we remind every one of us that you are the dwelling place, that not only do we have to make space for you, God, but we have to remind our parishioners and our community members and our stakeholders and our children that God is the place, that God doesn’t have membership lists, that God doesn’t have security in front of his doors, and that God welcomes every single human being made in God’s image into their houses of worship.
“And we should not be the last call, but the first call. We’re on the front lines of people who are suffering; the front lines of people who need to belong. For some people, we might be the closest they will ever see to what God can look like in their lives, and at the risk of imposing religion on this wonderful state, I want to encourage us all to find that reflection of God in every individual. Remember that we are talking to God’s very reflection when we speak to them.
“God, please ensure that all of us continue to be safe, continue to be nourished, and continue to walk in places where we carve out sanctuaries for one another, and make ourselves abundant in our homes, becoming extensions of the house of God.
“So God, as we pray for you to make yourself the sanctuary we can steward, we pray for you to work in every one of our lives, to unlock and keep open our sanctuaries.”
Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee
I will start by saying that I think I’m the first governor to have a pastor on my staff, Pastor Chris. Not only does he say a prayer for me every day, as we want to count our blessings, but he also convenes the leadership of all denominations in my office on a regular monthly basis, if not sooner, depending on the urgency of the matters we have to address, so we’re doing things that help the most vulnerable in our state. We’ll continue to do that, knowing we’ll never get all the way there, but we know there are things we can do.
Working with the General Assembly, we’ve created a dedicated stream for homelessness. That was not there before I became governor, and that is helping hundreds and thousands of people, in an organized way, to address and make a dent in that issue.
We provided tax relief for seniors and families raising children, and with what we’ve seen coming out of the White House, thinking about what the rabbi just said about losing our moral compass, we’re living that right now. When we have a president who goes to court to keep the homeless homeless, there’s a problem coming out of the White House, and our commitment is to do everything we possibly can to offset the moral compass deficiency that’s coming from President Trump.
During the period SNAP benefits were eliminated, I was in my office within a few minutes, allocating funds to ensure that every benefit available to those who needed it most was provided—100% of the SNAP benefit. We had to rely on our clergy, leadership, food bank, and nonprofits, and they came through.
In next week’s budget, I will use our resources to protect the most vulnerable Rhode Islanders from federal cuts to vital safety net programs. I will also provide and forward an affordability agenda to help families meet these basic needs and manage rising costs. We’ll be putting millions of dollars back into Rhode Islander’s pockets. We’ll address healthcare costs, affordable housing, homeownership, and energy prices, all things that are working against those who need it most.
I look forward to building on the momentum from the strategic plan and continuing to work on our Rhode Island 2030 plan, which addresses the issues. You’re here at a vigil today to make sure your voice is heard, and the vulnerable people in the state’s voice is heard. I look forward to building on the momentum that we have with my colleagues in the General Assembly, knowing there’s more to do. I thank you for having me here today. I’m not sure there’s ever been a time when this voice I’m hearing today needed to be heard loud and clear.

Now is the time to work together to address these issues. Since I became Speaker, I’ve addressed this wonderful coalition for six consecutive years, and I’m proud to say that your priorities are our priorities in the House... We will continue to listen to you. We’ll continue to work with you; our door is always open. Together, we have made great strides, especially in housing, and we will continue to do so. Why are we going to continue? Because there’s a need to continue. It doesn’t go away.
Sadly, I must tell you something that we all already know: what happens in Washington has a direct impact on what happens here in Rhode Island. Together with my good friend, the Senate President, the governor, and all of our colleagues in the General Assembly, we will work together to mitigate as best as humanly possible these devastating changes in our federal revenue streams that hurt the most vulnerable Rhode Islanders the most. It will not be easy. It’s time to buckle down and buckle up. We will look at every program and do everything we can to continue helping the people who need it most.
What I will tell you is that everyone behind me and everyone here as part of this coalition matters. Your voices do affect all of us. When we sit down to craft a budget together in May, we look at revenue projections and prioritize which programs are most important. We hear from you often, and it matters. Thank you for being here today, and, more importantly, for being here all the time. It’s critically important. Your voices matter.
Senate President Valerie Lawson
As the previous speakers said, we are so grateful for what you do. We in the Senate share your values, and your agenda is about helping Rhode Island’s neediest communities. I bring the Senate’s greetings and support. I’d like to begin this afternoon by acknowledging the tragic event that took place yesterday in Minneapolis. As this incident is investigated, I want to express the Senate’s deepest condolences to the family of Renee Nicole Good.
Here in Rhode Island and across the United States, all communities should be welcoming and safe for everyone. That should be our standard.
You support and advocate for these initiatives, you lift the most vulnerable members of our community, and you make powerful, positive differences every day in the lives of so many Rhode Islanders. As we move forward this legislative session, we will keep your priorities in mind, as our charge is to make Rhode Island a better place by caring for its people. We understand that’s your mission, as it is ours.
In these uncertain times for our nation, we must stand together to reaffirm our commitment to the values we share. We realize that as we deal with these federal policies harming Rhode Islanders, whether it’s SNAP, subsidies, or Medicaid, we need to collectively work to make sure Rhode Islander’s needs are met. We are committed to that in the Senate (and in the House and the governor), and we will work with you on it.
Although we are in unprecedented times and facing significant challenges, I am confident we can address them together. I stand proudly with this coalition today, and throughout this session. I’m a proud resident of East Providence, grateful to serve as a member of the Senate and as its president. On behalf of the Senate, I want you to know that we are deeply committed to fighting poverty and its roots here in Rhode Island. Thank you for sharing your priorities, and we look forward to working with you on what’s best for all. When we talk about what’s best for all, God shows us how to do that. He advises leading with love, kindness, and compassion. He says to take care of our neighbors and the poor. That means being a giver: acting, talking, and thinking more for the collective and less for yourself.
A media person called me earlier today and said I was just a paid spokesperson. I am so much more than that.
Those are the leaders we pray for, those who are speaking and aligning with God. We pray for them to make decisions for Rhode Island and to fight for our elderly, children, students, artists, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, workers, neighbors, and our earth, democracy, and rights. This year, an election year we are all watching, we need you to be proactive and not reactive to the atrocities and relentless attacks coming from D.C. God tells us fighting for justice is a mandate. The crisis is right here in Rhode Island: in our education and healthcare systems, and our lack of affordable housing. God tells us that fighting for equity is a mandate.
We fight for the needs of those with less, such as the child who eats only because of the free meals she receives at school; the teacher who is living in his car because there isn’t enough money for even the basics; the small business owner who wants to do right by her staff, but can’t afford healthcare for herself, nevermind her team; the parents who stop bringing their children to school, church, and playground, because ICE is using appearance, accents, and misdemeanors to separate and destroy families.
God tells us that fighting for one another is a mandate. The Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty’s 2026 priorities do just that. Our focus will be on funding for safe and affordable housing (and we know that the word ‘affordable’ means something different for everybody); school meals for all; funding and transportation improvements for RIPTA; reforming criminal codes, specifically adjusting that misdemeanor max from one year to 364 days so ICE doesn’t have another excuse; supporting the right to home healthcare aids for people with developmental disabilities, raising revenue and increasing tax fairness with a 3% surtax on the top 1% of earners; and replacing and replacing losses caused by federal funding reductions and eliminations with state funding.
Now is the time to give, not to give up or think selfishly. I prayed on what to say today because, previously, in this role, my job was to make some of you look and sound great. Coms people are always in the shadows, but God asked me to trust him and step into the light, even when I don’t have the energy, the money, or the mindset for the mountainous work that needs to occur for equity to be achieved. I am considered middle class, but I struggle to pay my mortgage on time. I have a roommate to share some expenses and help him out after a job loss. My health insurance, which I pay out of pocket, increased from $568 last year to $731 this year. And on Tuesday, doctors diagnosed me with breast cancer.
But this isn’t about me. This is about our elected officials hearing and recognizing the countless stories from Rhode Islanders. We want you to know that God is covering you in your work for us. We want you to know we are ready to work with you, regardless of where we are in our lives. We need you to stand in the light, aligned with God, and show us why our state motto mandates us to have hope.
Bishop Bruce Lewandowski
Prayer is always personal, and it’s easy to forget that prayer is also always communal. That is, when we pray, we remember our connection to God and God’s connection to us, but prayer always moves us to remember our connection as brothers and sisters. Whether it’s a worship service or spontaneous prayer among many or just a few, prayer strengthens, seeks guidance, and fosters love - love for God and love for neighbor.
We share, many of us, a common heritage, and that common heritage is remembered in sacred scripture. As I call out these names, remember the women and men who came before us and faced challenges similar to our own.
Remember Miriam, the sister of Moses. Remember the three youths in the fiery furnace, Daniel in the lion’s den, Jacob, who wrestled with God, Deborah the judge, and Queen Esther, who pleaded for the salvation of her people. I could continue calling out a litany of names. Each of these individuals lifted their voice and hands to God and prayed together as they walked shoulder to shoulder with brothers and sisters in the struggle. While the prayers of these individuals may resonate with our own lived experience, the one that moves me most is Queen Esther’s.
In sacred scripture, we find her prayer: “God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, blessed are you. Help me, who am alone and have no one but you. I am taking my life in my hands. As a child, I used to hear from my ancestors’ books that you, Lord, are always there and always free those who are oppressed. Now help me, Lord, who am alone and have only you, my Lord and my God, as my help. Save us. Turn our morning into gladness and our sorrow into wholeness and holiness.”
Paraphrased certainly, but that is Esther’s prayer. And it is the prayer of so many today across our country and right here in Rhode Island. Esther’s prayer is a prayer of strength and boldness. She desired to do good, and she dared to do it. So we remember her prayer not just as a prayer of courage and boldness, but as a prophetic prayer, and there’s a difference.
Prophetic prayer opens us to God’s plan, God’s will, God’s dream, and God’s vision for all people, that they may thrive.
Brothers and sisters, in this new year, let’s pray as Queen Esther did. Make her prayer our own, but make her courage, strength, boldness, and prophetic vision our own. Why? Well, we’re praying today for people who experience poverty in its many forms: for students and their school communities; for all in need of not just affordable housing, but excellent, dignified housing; for people who struggle because they don’t know how they’re going to get their prescriptions filled, test taken, or doctor visits accomplished because they don’t have affordable or any healthcare; people who struggle to find meaningful work and living wages for all who are in need; our immigrant brothers and sisters who face an uncertain future; and our environment that needs our care.
We pray for our legislators who can really and truly make a difference in the lives of all who call Rhode Island their home. Let’s pray for them, really and truly, with the prophetic prayer of Queen Esther: a bold, courageous prayer that envisions a future where all people can thrive.
We should never ask of God what we’re not willing to do or work for ourselves.
If we dare to ask much, we must be willing to do much. So let us pray like Esther, but work, too, like Esther, for the good of all in Rhode Island. Prayer is prophetic and opens us to God’s plan. Can you see it? Can you dream it? Then let’s do it.
For everyone who calls Rhode Island home: If you lift your hands in worship, you’d better get your feet ready to walk, because if you lift your hands in prayer, brothers and sisters, it means that you’re willing to move in the spirit and work not just for a better life for yourself and for those you love, but even for those you’ve never met and never seen before.
Stand here today like Esther. Say that to the person next to you: Stand here today like Esther. Pray like Esther, because just as Esther freed her people through prayer, power, and prophetic wisdom, we too can live in a state of hope. Amen.
