Rhode Island marches and rallies against the Trump Agenda
People will unite on different issues that Rhode Islanders care about: immigrant rights, racial justice, women’s rights, workers’ rights, LBGTQ+ rights, and environmental justice.
From a press release:
On Monday, January 20, at 1 pm, hundreds of people in Rhode Island will join millions of people across the country to take action to honor MLK’s legacy and fight back against Trump’s extreme-right billionaire agenda. A rally will begin at Classical High School, followed by a mass people’s march through the southside of Providence.
Trump ran a campaign promising to defend working people against the elite. But his planned policies and appointed advisors make it clear that he really serves the billionaires’ interests. While Trump wants to blame our problems on immigrants and other nations, the people of Rhode Island know that the real culprits are the tiny handful of extremely rich people, such as Trump’s cabinet members, who control the wealth that the working class creates.
Participating groups include PSL - Party for Socialism and Liberation, Palestinian Feminist Collective, AMOR - Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance, People’s Port Authority, DARE - Direct Action for Rights and Equality, The Olneyville Neighborhood Association, Jewish Voice for Peace RI, Graduate Labor Organization, Rhode Island College Students for Justice in Palestine, Black & Pink, Falasteen Diaspora United, Brown Divest Coalition, CPUSA-RI, PVD TGNB Community Group, Brown School of Public Health for Palestine, PrYSM - Providence Youth Student Movement, Dominican Students at Brown, and SURJ - Showing Up for Racial Justice.
On January 20th, Rhode Islanders will present their powerful people’s agenda. The rally and march will draw people from communities across the State to unite on different issues that Rhode Islanders care about: immigrant rights, racial justice, women’s rights, workers’ rights, LBGTQ+ rights, and environmental justice. Rhode Islanders will also call for an end to foreign wars and the end of United States arming and backing of Israel.
Meanwhile, from 2-4 pm, outside the Rhode Island State House there will be a Rally for the Planet organized by Climate Action Rhode Island and cosponsored by Citizens Climate Lobby, RI Democratic Women’s Caucus, Audubon Society of Rhode Island, George Wiley Center, Sunrise Movement, RI Working Families Party, Climate Jobs RI, Conservation Law Foundation, RI Transit Riders, Green Energy Consumers Alliance, Indivisible RI, Climate Conversations, RI Environmental Education Association, and Student Action for Sustainability.
“This is our moment to create lasting change,” said Jeff Migneault, Co-President of CARI. “It’s clear that climate change is impacting our families, our communities, and our way of life. We’re seeing it in hotter summers, stronger storms, and even the food we grow. While the incoming administration will try to deny or even accelerate the problem, Rhode Islanders know we can’t afford to wait. We need bold action to protect our environment and build a better future for everyone. Join us on Inauguration Day and MLK Day as we stand together to demand our Rhode Island leaders step up to ensure clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet for all of us.”
Speakers include:
Providence City Councilmember Sue AnderBois
Darrèll Brown, VP, Conservation Law Foundation
RI Senator Meghan Kallman
RI Representative David Morales
RI Representative Jennifer Stewart
Aaron Regunberg, Director, Climate Accountability Project at Public Citizen
Also, the one and only Extraordinary Rendition Band will be on the scene to kick things off!
