Jewish Voice for Peace RI protests at Congressional delegations’ homes in honor of Nakba Day
"JVP Rhode Island calls on Representatives Gabe Amo and Magaziner and Senators Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse to stop funding the Israeli military..."
From a JVP RI press release:
This morning, from 7 am to 8 am, Jewish Voice for Peace Rhode Island (JVP RI) held noise demonstrations outside the Rhode Island residences of United States Representative Seth Magaziner (Democrat, Rhode Island) and Senator Jack Reed (Democrat, Rhode Island). These coordinated protests, falling on the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, demonstrate local opposition to the Rhode Island congressional delegation's continued support of the Israeli military as they conduct genocide in Gaza using United States weapons and our tax dollars.
In May 1948, nearly 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homes and more than 500 Palestinian towns and villages were destroyed by Israeli forces in an event remembered by Palestinians as the Nakba and commemorated each year on May 15. 76 years later, Jewish Rhode Islanders and community members gathered at the homes of our elected leaders to urge them to end their complicity in the ongoing genocide and displacement of over one million Palestinians in Gaza.
Protesters chanted, played instruments, and made noise to wake up the congress members' families and demand they take action to end United States complicity in the horror unfolding in Gaza. JVP RI commemorates the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who lost their homes in 1948 and since October 7, demanding Reed and Magaziner listen to their constituents and take a stand against continued United States military, economic, and diplomatic support for the Israeli government's atrocities.
At Representative Magaziner's home in Providence, constituents spoke about the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. They criticized the representative's support for sending billions of dollars in aid to the Israeli government as it attempts to force the evacuation of over one million sheltering Palestinians. At Senator Reed's home in Jamestown, protesters highlighted Reed's unique responsibility for the deaths of over 35,000 Palestinians in Gaza as Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
As Gaza descends into forced famine and the Israeli military continues its assault in Rafah, where over one million displaced Palestinians are sheltering, Jewish Rhode Islanders demanded on Nakba Day that our representatives stand for an end to displacement and violence. JVP Rhode Island calls on Representatives Gabe Amo and Magaziner and Senators Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse to stop funding the Israeli military; support an immediate and permanent ceasefire; and support humanitarian aid including the reinstatement of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
again I'll note these totally onepsided protests do no good, short term or long term, they alonly anny most people.
For ecxample, this fails to note the parallel ethnic cleansing all Jews from all the nearby Arab countiries who with theor descendants constitute about half of Israel's Jewish population.
It fails to suggest what Israel should do in response to the savage sadistic attack and openly genocidal intent of Hamas and their jihadi allies, the "death to Israel" policy of Iran and its proxies..
Israel's actions in Gaza are indeed beyond apalling, we do need a cease-fire, return of hostages, and much more humitarian aid asap. But to get that, demands also have to be made on Hamas which turned down a 6 week cease-fire proposal because they would have to return some of the hostages (reortedly only 32 of them) It would help if supposedly proPalestinain groups made that demand on Hamas.
Longer tern we need to try to replace both the Hamas and Netanyahu regimes and work for reconcilation and compromise, compromise, by all, the only wat ro peace and better lives
