BLM RI PAC's open letter to Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien: Save Morley Field
"...the field’s current state of neglect and disrepair signals to the community that their well-being is not a priority."
Action items:
Attend the rally on Thursday, November 21, from 5-6 pm (see flyer below)
Dear Mayor Donald Grebien of the City of Pawtucket,
On behalf of the residents of Woodlawn, concerned citizens across Pawtucket, and over 500 individuals statewide who have signed a petition to protect Morley Field, the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island Political Action Committee (BLM RI PAC) urges your administration to cease plans to close and pave over this vital community green space. Morley Field, funded through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, was intended to serve as a permanent public park. The City of Pawtucket’s ongoing efforts to repurpose this space for industrial parking directly contradict this purpose and disregard the voices of the community you serve.
Over the years, Morley Field has provided children, families, and neighbors a much-needed space for recreation, community gatherings, and athletic activities. Yet, the field’s current state of neglect and disrepair signals to the community that their well-being is not a priority. Despite public hearings, online polls, and consistent advocacy by local leaders, including Pawtucket District 5 Councilman Clovis Gregor and State Representative Cherie Cruz, the City continues to push forward with its plans against the community’s overwhelming opposition.
The demands of the community are clear:
Restore Morley Field to its intended use as a public green space for recreational and community activities.
Invest in improving and expanding the field to better meet the needs of Woodlawn residents.
Cease the practice of closing parks in neighborhoods of color while prioritizing park development in wealthier, predominantly white areas.
Engage in meaningful dialogue with residents and elected officials to ensure future planning reflects their needs and priorities.
We also remind you of the upcoming “Save Morley Field” rally on Thursday, November 21, at 5:00 PM at Pawtucket City Hall. This rally represents a collective call for justice and equity in urban planning and environmental stewardship. We strongly encourage your attendance and participation to demonstrate your support for the residents of Woodlawn and your commitment to serving all Pawtucket residents equitably.
The community’s resolve is steadfast, as evidenced by over 500 signatures requesting that Morley Field be restored and maintained as the park it was always intended to be. Morley Field is more than just a piece of land; it is a symbol of environmental justice and a promise of opportunity and well-being for current and future generations. Mayor Grebien, we urge you to listen to the voices of your constituents and take decisive action to protect Morley Field. The community is watching, and the time to act is now.
Sincerely,
Harrison Tuttle
President, Black Lives Matter Rhode Island Political Action Committee
