BLM RI PAC calls for accountability ahead of crucial House Judiciary Committee hearing on police reform
“I urge lawmakers to seize this moment to enact meaningful reform that addresses systemic injustices faced by Black communities in Rhode Island," said Harrison Tuttle, , President of the BLM RI PAC.
From a BLM RI PAC press release:
Today, the House Judiciary Committee is hosting crucial hearings on legislation aimed at rectifying historical injustices inflicted within law enforcement. The Black Lives Matter Rhode Island Political Action Committee (BLM RI PAC) stands in strong support of these legislative efforts to promote police accountability and transparency in our state.
Among the significant pieces of legislation being considered is being put forth by Pawtucket Representative Jennifer Stewart for the second consecutive year: the Repeal of the Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights (LEOBOR)(H7198). This legislation is a critical step toward dismantling the barriers that have shielded police officers from accountability for decades. By repealing LEOBOR, Rhode Island has the opportunity to establish a fairer and more just system of police oversight.
“Black History Month serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality," said Harrison Tuttle, President of the BLM RI PAC. “I urge lawmakers to seize this moment to enact meaningful reform that addresses systemic injustices faced by Black communities in Rhode Island. Our state legislature must take decisive action to build a more equitable and inclusive society for all Rhode Islanders.”
Additionally, the Judiciary Committee is reviewing a racial profiling data collection bill (H7099) and a police decertification bill (H7312). If passed, these bills will provide the public with access to vital information regarding disparities in arrest rates and ensure that officers who engage in misconduct are held accountable for their actions.
