As Paul Cuffee Middle School educators vote to unionize, the school becomes the first fully unionized charter in the state

In a historic move, educators at Paul Cuffee Middle School have voted to unionize, joining their colleagues at the Lower and Upper Schools in affiliating with the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals (RIFTHP). With this vote, Paul Cuffee becomes the first fully unionized charter school in the State of Rhode Island.

This latest vote marks the culmination of a year-long organizing effort across all three campuses—Lower, Middle, and Upper—uniting Paul Cuffee educators in a shared mission to strengthen their school community through collective action. The Lower and Upper Schools are already engaged in contract negotiations focused on improving learning conditions, ensuring professional respect, and creating a more sustainable and equitable workplace.
